NIGHT TERRORS
I was living in Canada when my first terrifying experience happened. I went to bed as normal and in a matter of seconds I felt someone sit on the edge of the bed- I actually saw the edge of the bed move down. I froze. As I knew that my wife was in the living room watching TV but I couldn’t call out to her.
After a few seconds- which seemed like an eternity- I felt the presence lift up from the bed. At the same time, I saw the edge of the bed rise up to. I finally looked around but there was nothing to see. I never told my wife or anyone about my experience as I doubted if any one would believe me.
About ten years later I returned to England for a holiday and visited my sister in Portsmouth. She told me about a terrible experience that she’d had which was almost exactly the same as mine!
It had happened to her at about the same time as mine did while I was in Canada. Can you explain these weird events?

Sleep and dream studies have revealed that many people have had exactly the same experience as yours. There’s a section of nerves at the brain stem called the Pons area, which has been shown to stop the body thrashing around in sleep when you’re dreaming.
You and your sister may share a common complaint in which very occasionally this area of the brain paralyses the body although you are fully awake. This is so frightening that many people have hallucinations of being attacked by spirits, sat on by an old hag or being throttled by the bedclothes.
